Our Exciting Museum Trip!

This week, Room 1 set off on a bus trip to the museum.

At the museum, our first stop was the volcano exhibit. We learned about the three types of volcanoes — active, dormant, and extinct — and discovered some facts about the volcanoes right here in Auckland. We explored the layers of the Earth, the parts of a volcano, and even carried out a fun experiment where we made a vinegar and baking soda volcano erupt! One of the most exciting parts was getting to handle real volcanic rocks and feel their rough texture.

Next, we explored the Weird & Wonderful Gallery, where students saw all sorts of interesting and unusual objects. The Origins Gallery gave us a glimpse into the history of life on Earth.

We also walked through Mana: Protest in Print, Atarau: Stories of the New Zealand Wars, and Scars on the Heart (about WWI and WWII). These exhibits helped us imagine life in different times and the challenges people faced. Some students even dressed up in clothes from the olden days, which brought plenty of smiles.

By the end of the day, we had learned so much — from fiery volcanoes to deep history. It was a fun day full of learning for everyone.

Swimming fun!

This week, Room 1 went to the swimming pool to take part in our water safety lessons. The students learned how to be confident in the water and practised important skills like floating, kicking, and following instructions. It was a fun learning experience and we are already looking forward to the next trip!

Planting Our Bean Seeds

As part of our inquiry, How do plants grow?, Room 1 students had the opportunity to sow their very own bean seed. Over the coming weeks, we will observe the changes and record how our bean plants grow. The students are already looking forward to seeing their seedlings sprout!

Learning the letter Cc

This week, our focus was on the letter Cc, a letter that can be a little tricky because it makes two different sounds! We explored both the hard ‘C’ sound (like in cat and candle) and the soft ‘C sound (like in circle and circus).

Tui Mai Tui Atu- Otahuhu Primary School.

Yesterday, Room 1 explored and visited one of their Tui Mai Tui Atu buddy schools. We used Google Maps to look at what Otahuhu School looked like from above. We learnt how to take a screen shot of the map and then we added text using our text tool. One tip we can share is to lock your picture in place before you use your text tool.

Volcano adventure!

What a fun way to end the term! We made a volcano using baking soda and vinegar, and everyone was excited to see the bubbly eruption. Room 3 joined us on this exciting science adventure!

Watch out here come our Robots!

Today we made robots, to help with our volcanologist! We made a head, eyes, ears, nose and mouth. We added arms, hands legs and feet so our robot can move around on the Volcano! This was our final part to our series of our study of Volcanos.

Celebrating Matariki!

Room 1 students celebrated Matariki by enjoying a warm cup of Milo and some biscuits. The celebration ended as they came together to dance to a Matariki song. Happy Matariki all!

Duplicating shapes and using our different pen options in EE

Today, In Cybersmart with Whaea Rupa and Matua Peter we learnt how to use duplicate images, layers and different fill colours and pen textures to make a Matariki star. We found it a challenge to group our stars together at times, but we kept on trying to get them into the correct position.  We had a lot of fun.

Nature on our wrists!

This week, our students welcomed Rachel Clare, author of the book Play Wild: Nature Craft Projects for Tamariki. She shared how we can create beautiful things using items found in nature. The students loved making their own wristbands, decorating them with leaves, twigs, and flowers.
